Jimmy Hoffa’s Family Resurrects His Lake House

Jimmy Hoffa, the well-known labor leader and former president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, had a special place away from the public eye—his family retreat by Lake Orion, located about 38 miles north of Detroit. This modest wooden house was a haven for Hoffa, where he spent quality time with his wife Josephine, their children Barbara and James, and his grandchildren.

However, it was from this very place that Hoffa disappeared on the afternoon of July 30, 1975, leading to a tragic chapter in his life.

Family Reflections

“He cherished this home,” Hoffa’s son James recalled. “When he was here, he was simply a dad.” Recently, James and his son David revisited the house for a feature on their family’s legacy as part of a series titled “Riddle: The Search for James R. Hoffa.”

Interestingly, although Hoffa sold the home in 1986, it’s almost as if time stood still since the summer of 1975. His old furniture remains, including a wooden-panel console TV standing in the living room, where it once accompanied Hoffa during his leisure time. There’s also a copy of 1975’s Who’s Who in America nestled among other titles on a shelf, a nostalgic testament to his prominence during that era.

The living room still features the familiar green shag carpeting, and even his garden tractor, used for mowing, is still around, unbelievably clocking in at 3,415 hours—a symbol of simpler days spent outdoors.

A Father’s Dedication

James spoke fondly of his father, noting that, despite his hectic schedule, Hoffa always made time for his family. “He was busy, certainly, but he was a great dad,” he stated. Hoffa was hands-on as well—he even helped build parts of the family home.

This summer, the house is on the path to new life, as it was recently acquired by Susan and John Hagen. They aim to restore it and preserve its rich history. “When we first saw it, we immediately recognized it as Jimmy Hoffa’s summer estate,” John shared.

Preserving History

Visiting the property, the Hagens have committed to learning everything about its previous owner. “Understanding Hoffa’s significance to laborers of his time has made this endeavor even more meaningful for us,” John explained.

They’ve begun documenting their renovation process on a dedicated Facebook page. Improvements already underway include repainting Hoffa’s original totem poles, uncovering hidden patios, and restoring outdoor picnic tables.

But the restoration isn’t without challenges. The home and grounds have faced years of neglect, as overgrowth has taken its toll. Nonetheless, with John’s background as a builder, they’re prepared to take on the task. “Our goal is to restore the house to its former glory, even if it means rebuilding parts of it,” he said.

A Lasting Legacy

James Hoffa appreciates the new owners’ dedication. “They’re good people, and I know they’ll do a great job,” he stated. The house serves not only as a reminder of Hoffa’s legacy but also as a connection for the family he loved so much.

As John Hagen reflected on Hoffa’s life, he was touched by the family’s bond. “Listening to James P. Hoffa made me hope that my own kids will create wonderful memories at their future homes, just as he has,” he noted.

The Hagens look forward to honoring Hoffa’s spirit through their renovations while ensuring the house continues to be a cherished part of the family’s story.

Ultimately, Hoffa’s legacy lives on—not just in the tales of his labor accomplishments but in the love he shared with his family at their beloved lake house.
