Jimmy Kimmel Compares Upcoming “No Kings” Protests to the American Revolution
Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, known for his critical stance towards former President Donald Trump, has drawn a parallel between the upcoming “No Kings” protests and the American Revolution. In his monologue on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” he expressed support for the planned rally, asserting that it embodies the same spirit as those who fought for American independence.
“There’s nothing more American than political protest. The American Revolution was a ‘no king’ protest,” Kimmel remarked.
More than 2,500 “No Kings” demonstrations are set to take place across all 50 states on Saturday, aiming to oppose various policies of the Trump administration, particularly those regarding immigration and crime in cities. Over 200 progressive organizations are participating in organizing the events, which they hope will draw millions of attendees. Significant gatherings are anticipated in major cities like Washington DC, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
Demonstrators have been encouraged to wear yellow to show “solidarity in the face of repression,” with organizers criticizing the government for allegedly sending militarized agents into communities and doing little to support struggling families.
Republican leaders, on the other hand, have labeled the protests as anti-American. House Speaker Mike Johnson has suggested that the demonstrations are fueled by extremist groups and accused Democrats of stalling government shutdown talks to cater to their base.
Kimmel dismissed these criticisms, countering that protesting against a potential dictator should be viewed as an act of patriotism. He sarcastically questioned the judgment of those who criticize peaceful protests while downplaying the violence of the January 6 Capitol riot.
He also challenged attendees to create signs at the rally that humorously poke fun at Trump’s weight, humorously cautioning against using certain phrases that might offend the former president.
“And if you’re going to go to a rally and you’re going to make your own sign—everyone there has a sign—remember, our president is very sensitive about his weight,” Kimmel joked, adding, “That’s disrespectful. He’s going to put you in jail.”
Kimmel’s remarks come shortly after his show faced a brief suspension over comments regarding a suspect in a tragic incident that he later clarified were misinterpreted.
