Kimmel Defends Comey Amid Controversy
Amid significant public relations challenges, including calls for a boycott of ABC’s late-night show and a conflict involving Disney and the FCC, Jimmy Kimmel intensified his criticism of President Trump. This came on the heels of former FBI Director James Comey being indicted on charges related to alleged threats against the president.
Kimmel, in his opening monologue, remarked, “Just when you think they’ve hit peak absurdity with this, they manage to escalate things by filing criminal charges against Comey, who Trump seems to dislike purely for doing his job.” He also referenced his previous comments regarding Melania Trump, highlighting the ongoing tension.
Continuing, he noted, “Comey was once accused of obstruction and making false statements, and those charges didn’t gain any traction. Now, they’re accusing him again of making a serious threat to the president’s life regarding a picture of a seashell that, if you put it together, hints at a message.” Kimmel didn’t hold back, implying this was an overreaction by the authorities.
He explained, “The term ’86’ in restaurant lingo means to exclude someone, and Trump being the 47th president plays into this. It’s just a seashell photo, not a real menace. How can anyone interpret that as a threat?” His humor aimed to downplay the situation, suggesting it resembled something an aunt might buy for decoration.
Comey, indicted by a federal grand jury, faces serious charges including threatening the president’s life and sending threatening communications across state lines, each potentially leading to a decade in prison.
This indictment relates to Comey’s Instagram post from May, which depicted a seashell resembling the number 8647. The number has become a marker in certain anti-Trump movements, indicating some familiar political undertones.
In response to the charges, Comey reaffirmed his innocence on a video shared Tuesday, stating he is “not afraid” of the allegations. He elaborated, “They’re back at it over an Instagram photo from a year ago. This isn’t the end; I’m standing firm in my beliefs and trust in the judicial system.”
