Jimmy Kimmel Addresses Reaction to Comments on Charlie Kirk’s Death
This week, late-night host Jimmy Kimmel spoke out about how conservative media has been portraying his response to the death of activist Charlie Kirk. He believes these outlets are deliberately distorting his words.
In an interview with Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw at their annual Screentime Event, Kimmel reflected on the backlash he faced after he mistakenly suggested that the suspect in Kirk’s shooting might be a MAGA supporter. This led to discussions about free speech, especially when Kimmel experienced a brief suspension from his show.
When asked how he perceived the unfolding events, Kimmel shared, “At first, I didn’t think it was a huge issue. I just viewed it as some right-wing networks misrepresenting what I’d said, and I wanted to clarify it.” He admitted that it wasn’t until the show was taken off the air that he realized the seriousness of the situation.
Reflecting on the experience, he mentioned some insightful conversations with network leadership prior to this incident, which provided him with a clearer perspective. “I can be a bit reactionary or aggressive sometimes,” he acknowledged, “but those days of reflection were helpful.” He emphasized that his initial statements were not driven by emotion but rather a desire to clarify his intent.
Kimmel expressed frustration over what he felt were unfair circumstances for Disney’s executives, stating, “It’s insane that anyone should have to endure this.” He hopes Americans can collectively define acceptable boundaries in discussions like these.
After his return from suspension, Kimmel endeavored to address viewers directly, saying, “It’s crucial for me to express that I never intended to make light of anyone’s death or to blame specific groups.” He recognized that some may have felt it was poor timing for his comments and empathized with their reactions. “If the roles were reversed, I probably would have felt the same,” he admitted.
