Jimmy Kimmel’s Show Pulled Indefinitely After Controversial Remarks
Host of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, Jimmy Kimmel, has been removed from the air indefinitely following serious allegations surrounding the recent actions of Tyler Robicion, a 22-year-old gunman who fatally shot conservative figure Charlie Kirk.
In his opening monologue, Kimmel criticized what he described as the “Magagang” trying to spin the narrative around Robicion’s actions for political gain. He expressed a sense of grief, stating, “There was sadness between my fingers.”
After these comments aired, ABC announced that “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” would be preempted indefinitely. A representative stated that the network felt Kimmel’s remarks did not align with the community’s sentiments or values.
Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar’s broadcasting division, described Kimmel’s comments as “aggressive and insensitive” at such a crucial time in American political discourse. This decision received a mixed response, with some right-wing commentators labeling Kimmel’s remarks as “sick.” Brendan Kerr, a commentator, warned of significant consequences for Disney, emphasizing that companies like it have a responsibility to act in the public interest.
Former President Trump praised ABC’s decision, suggesting other networks, like NBC, should also consider removing Kimmel from their lineups. He commended ABC for what he termed “ultimate courage.” Trump also critiqued Kimmel’s talent and ratings, implying they were subpar compared to others in late-night television.
In addition to Kimmel, backlash has also affected other media personalities. MSNBC’s political analyst Matthew Dowd was dismissed after his comments linking hate speech to violent actions. Similarly, the Washington Post fired columnist Karen Attia for her remarks regarding the racial dynamics of the response to Kirk’s murder.
