Jimmy Kimmel Wasn't Concerned About His Claim that Charlie Kirk's Killer Belonged to the 'MAGA Gang'

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel recently expressed confusion over the backlash regarding his comments about the murdered conservative figure Charlie Kirk, attributing the uproar to “right-wing media outlets” that, in his view, misrepresented his remarks.

“Honestly, I didn’t see it as a major issue. It felt like a distortion by some right-wing networks, and I was just trying to clarify,” Kimmel stated during a Wednesday chat with Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw.

“You know, sometimes you think, ‘This isn’t a big deal,’ but it blows up into something major; other times, you think something is significant, and no one even notices.”

When asked when he recognized the situation was problematic, Kimmel humorously remarked, “I guess it was when the show got canceled,” drawing laughs from the crowd.

“Did you think your initial comment was misinterpreted?” the show queried. Kimmel replied, “I didn’t just think it; it was. I believe it was deliberately and maybe even maliciously mischaracterized.”

Notably, only days after Charlie Kirk’s assassination, Kimmel had told viewers that it was likely one of them who had committed the act. He even suggested that the killer might be affiliated with a “MAGA gang” and mocked President Trump for his response, which included ordering flags to be flown at half-mast.

In response, ABC and Disney temporarily withdrew their partnership, with Nexstar, the broadcast company, labeling Kimmel’s comments as “offensive and insensitive,” particularly during a crucial time in national politics. They stressed the need for “respectful and constructive dialogue.”

On his return, Kimmel faced criticism for his unapologetic take on the matter, with accusations that he was framing himself as a victim in a “typical left-wing manner.”

Kirk’s assassination sent shockwaves internationally and sparked widespread mourning for the Turning Point USA founder, who was seen as a champion of free speech until he was killed on September 10 while engaging with students at Utah Valley University.

Conversely, the left’s response further escalated the situation. Many observed a disturbing reflection of societal decay, particularly as some justified celebrating the assassination simply because of ideological differences.

Kimmel’s comments, made amid this contentious atmosphere, did little to ameliorate the situation, provoking backlash even from other left-leaning media personalities who refused to entertain the idea that Kirk might have been killed by someone with a similar political stance.
