Jimmy Swaggart’s Health Update
Jimmy Swaggart, at 90 years old, is currently reported to be in “critical condition” following a cardiac arrest. He has garnered attention as America’s longest-serving television evangelist.
Back in the mid-1980s, Swaggart was among the top-rated preachers on TV, with his Sunday broadcasts reaching over 2 million homes across the nation.
His son, Donnie Swaggart, recently addressed their church congregation during a Sunday service, requesting prayer for his father, emphasizing that only a “miracle” could possibly prolong his father’s life.
“On this Father’s Day, we urgently ask you to pray for Brother Swaggart. He needs a miracle from heaven right now, this morning. We must have the Lord intervene in this situation, and we need your prayers,” Donnie shared on his father’s Facebook account.
“He’s my rock and my hero and he needs the Lord’s healing power today. If I am able to get away, I will try to be at the service to give everyone an update,” he added in another post.
Swaggart’s ministry journey began in 1955, making him the longest-running evangelist to air on television in American history. He was ordained by the Assemblies of God, the largest Pentecostal organization in the world, back in 1961, and established a significant ministry throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
However, his reputation faced major setbacks following a scandal in the late 1980s involving allegations of sexual misconduct. He was subsequently defrocked by the Assemblies of God and shifted to lead a non-denominational ministry. It’s worth noting that Pentecostalism represents a diverse theological movement rather than a single church.
His reputation took a further hit after reports surfaced about his visits to a prostitute in New Orleans, with another incident involving a different woman emerging later on.
“Just four days later, [the prostitute] came forward on a New Orleans television news program and provided more details regarding Swaggart’s unusual predilections. She stated that while Swaggart was a regular client, their interactions never involved intercourse; instead, he paid her to pose for photographs,” as stated by EBSCO.
Swaggart made headlines again in 2004 when he infamously claimed during a televised service that he would harm any homosexual man who looked at him inappropriately. Later, he claimed it was merely a joke, insisting he intended no real threat.
“I’ve never seen a man in my life I wanted to marry. And I’m gonna be blunt and plain: if one ever looks at me like that, I’m gonna kill him and tell God he died,” he stated.
