Michigan’s JJ McCarthy, who won a national title this past college season, is the quarterback who has everyone’s draft board excited ahead of Thursday night’s start of the 2024 NFL Draft.
There are rumors that he is a true wild card and could move up to No. 2 with the Washington Commanders, or that a team like the Denver Broncos or Minnesota Vikings could move up to the top 10 to nab him. It’s swirling.
However, the New York Giants, who are No. 6 overall, are also rumored to want a quarterback and have even contacted the New England Patriots to see if No. 3 could make the jump.

Appearing on “The Rich Eisen Show” in Detroit on Wednesday, McCarthy was asked by the veteran broadcaster if he had any idea where he was headed in the draft.
He immediately mentioned New York.
“So I have some ideas,” McCarthy said. “The New York Giants are the team I’ve spent the most time with. They’re a phenomenal staff, I love the coaches.” [Brian] I love you, Dabol. Formation, motion, play, everything else is similar.
“It was great to be able to make that installation happen. I met with them twice and just being a part of it at Easter was great. I’ve never done anything like that before, but it was so much fun.”
Is it possible that McCarthy inadvertently upset the Giants’ first-round draft plans?
The Giants never expected they would be in position to acquire a quarterback after signing Daniel Jones, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, to a four-year extension in March 2023.
But after he struggled until he suffered a season-ending torn ACL in a game against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 9, there were reports that the Giants were interested in moving him on — preferably in a trade — after the 2024 season. may also opt out of the agreement).

But no one really knows what the Giants want to do, considering they would benefit from drafting an elite wide receiver. LSU’s Malik Nabors, Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. and Washington University’s Roma Odunze lead the pack there, as multiple QBs are expected to be taken early in the draft. , the Giants may have a chance to draft one of them to pair with Jones next season.
But it’s hard to overlook McCarthy, who has spent the most time in this draft process with the Giants. He said he also took one of his three personal visits with the Giants.
But after talking about the Giants, McCarthy mentioned recent visits with the New England Patriots and Washington Commanders, which were his other two personal visits.
“New England and Washington just came from there,” he told Eisen. “I love the energy in that building. You can feel the sense of urgency to rebuild, to come out on top, to be competitive.”
McCarthy also quickly mentioned the Broncos and Vikings.
“It would be an honor to play for any of these teams, but ultimately that’s the most fun part of this process. It’s their choice. I’m going to appreciate it and make the most of it wherever I go.” ” He said.
