JJ Redick and Mauricio Pochettino exchange jerseys ahead of World Cup match

On June 25, a large number of sports enthusiasts across the U.S. will tune in to see the men’s national soccer team play against Turkey at SoFi Stadium.

For Team USA, the outcome is less critical since victories in their first two World Cup group stage matches guarantee their advancement to the Round of 32 and Group D. Still, the team is eager to keep the momentum going, and fans are hopeful for another win.

The upcoming match in Los Angeles is also a magnet for celebrities and sports figures, including Lakers coach JJ Redick, who is set to attend the game.

Redick met with U.S. men’s soccer coach Mauricio Pochettino at SoFi Stadium the day before Pochettino’s press conference. They shared a brief, amicable chat, exchanged jerseys, and took some time for autographs.

Pochettino found out that it was Redick’s birthday during their meeting. He also noted that it was a special day for soccer legend Lionel Messi and U.S. goalkeeper Matt Turner as well.

“So, happy birthday to everyone! We talked about how amazing the stadium is. He mentioned feeling proud of the strides being made in American football. I asked if he’d be at the game, but—unfortunately—he has plans with his wife,” Pochettino reported about their interaction.

Despite the ongoing 2026 NBA Draft, where the Lakers recently traded to select Baylor’s Cameron Carr, Redick still managed to connect with Pochettino. The Lakers have also made arrangements to move into the second round of the draft.

Even though Redick won’t be at the match, he’ll likely be following Team USA’s progress closely, aware that the results will not impact their World Cup journey.
