Pittsburgh Steelers players have been reflecting on an emotionally charged final meeting with head coach Mike Tomlin. Former NFL player JJ Watt, whose brother TJ Watt reportedly felt the weight of Tomlin’s resignation, expressed a desire to have remained in the locker room during that moment. Watt shared a poignant moment from a report, where Aaron Rodgers was visibly upset and told Tomlin, “I’m sorry.” He conveyed on social media, “I wish I could have stayed in the conference room at this moment.”
TJ Watt has always been a dedicated supporter of Tomlin, even going so far as to state in contract discussions that he only wanted to play for him. As Tomlin broke the news of his resignation, TJ couldn’t hold back tears and repeated “no” in disbelief.
JJ Watt also wished the more personal details of the meeting hadn’t been made public. This gathering marked the end of Tomlin’s impactful 19-season tenure with the Steelers, during which he amassed a 193-114-2 record, claimed eight AFC North titles, appeared in two Super Bowls, and secured one championship.
As for Tomlin’s future, it’s uncertain whether he plans to coach next season or take a break. At 53, he remains highly sought after; various television networks have expressed interest in hiring him as an analyst.
Meanwhile, the Steelers are now on the hunt for a head coach for the fourth time since 1969. Several candidates have already been interviewed or are on the list for interviews. The search continues amidst significant expectations following Tomlin’s remarkable tenure.
