Joan Kennedy, First Wife of Ted Kennedy, Passes Away at 89
Joan Kennedy, known as the first wife of the late Senator Ted Kennedy and a significant figure from the Kennedy legacy, has passed away at the age of 89.
According to an obituary shared on GolocalProv, she “passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Boston, Massachusetts, on October 8.” The announcement was made by Steve Kerrigan, a Massachusetts Democrat.
Joan, a gifted classical pianist with a master’s degree in education, never remarried following her divorce from Ted Kennedy in 1983. In recent years, she had largely retreated from the public eye.
Born in 1936, Joan met Ted through her sister Jean Kennedy in 1957 while they were both students at Manhattanville College. Their engagement reportedly came at the encouragement of Kennedy’s father, Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., and they married on November 29, 1958, in Bronxville, New York, where she grew up.
The couple’s 22-year marriage resulted in three children: Kara, Ted Jr., and Patrick, alongside facing both a challenging political landscape and personal losses.
A tragic incident in July 1969 marked a dark chapter in their lives when Ted’s car went off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, leading to the death of passenger Mary Jo Kopechne. Joan, attending the funeral, felt the aftermath of this event weigh heavily on their marriage and public perception.
In the ensuing years, Joan faced further difficulties as reports about Ted’s infidelity and struggles with alcohol made headlines. She often seemed to navigate the tumultuous waters of the Kennedy family with quiet resilience.
Although Joan and Ted’s marriage ended in the early 1980s, Joan remained closely connected to one of the most recognized figures in American politics.
Patrick Kennedy reflected on his mother’s impact, stating, “I will always admire her for the way she faced her challenges with grace, courage, humility, and honesty…” He added that she was not just a devoted mother and talented musician, but a vital figure for many dealing with mental health issues. Her influence will be felt deeply within both the Kennedy family and the arts community in Boston.
Funeral details are available on the obituary page.
