Joan Kennedy Passes Away at 89
Joan Kennedy, the former wife of Senator Edward “Ted” Kennedy, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 89. Her son, Patrick Kennedy, along with his wife, Amy, released a statement confirming her death.
Their marriage, marked by public scrutiny and personal challenges, came to an end in 1983 amid Ted Kennedy’s well-publicized infidelities. Patrick and Amy Kennedy praised her as a classically trained pianist, an advocate for mental health and addiction recovery, and someone who spoke openly about alcoholism and depression during a time when few would.
“Her courage and honesty helped break down stigmas and encouraged many to seek help,” they said. “Joan will be remembered for her contributions to the arts, her dedication to mental health advocacy, and her love for the Boston community.”
In a marriage that weathered significant crises, including the infamous Chappaquiddick accident in 1969—where Ted’s car went off a bridge, resulting in the death of passenger Mary Jo Kopechne—Joan remained steadfast. He managed to escape the car but chose to delay contacting authorities, ultimately pleading guilty to charges related to the incident.
By the time Joan attempted to make a run for a U.S. Senate seat in 1980, it was clear their relationship was strained. They were separated, and a notable campaign sticker read, “Vote Jimmy Carter, Free Joan Kennedy.”
As of now, Joanne’s nephew, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is also Health and Human Services Secretary, has not publicly commented on her passing.
