Controversy Surrounds Job Rejection for Israeli Applicant
A 24-year-old Israeli woman was left shocked after receiving a harsh rejection email from a Melbourne nursery, labeled “disgusting” by civil rights advocates. This incident has stirred public outcry, leading to protests outside the Garden of Eden nursery school and prompting the company to issue an apology for the remarks made by one of its co-owners.
The applicant, who chose to remain anonymous, received an email stating that the position had been given to someone deemed more “humane.” It included inflammatory comments urging her to leave Australia, saying, “Liberate Palestine and stop the genocide now. You are complicit with IT.”
After relocating to Australia, the woman had expected an open and friendly atmosphere but expressed her dismay at the negative response. “I came to Australia believing it to be a fair and welcoming country, but it was heartbreaking to read so many hostile words,” she remarked, emphasizing that she felt judged for her nationality rather than her qualifications.
In a phone conversation, Brett Dahan, one of the nursery co-owners, claimed he had “no idea” why he sent the message but did not respond further to media inquiries.
The incident has galvanized a strong reaction from the Jewish community, resulting in protests at the nursery. According to Australia’s Equal Opportunities Act, it is legally unacceptable to discriminate against job candidates based on their nationality.
On Sunday, the nursery issued a statement expressing regret for the “recent messages sent by staff,” and acknowledged that it was addressing the situation internally. “Garden of Eden Nursery would like to express its regret and sincere apologies to the community regarding recent messages,” the statement read.
However, Dr. Dovir Abramovich, head of the Anti-Defamation Commission, condemned the nursery’s response, asserting that the real accountability would come in the form of shutting down the business. He claimed the message was not a mere mistake but a calculated act of humiliation that warranted a direct apology to the applicant.
The nursery did not provide any further comments when approached by the media.
