Former President Joe Biden has received a diagnosis of prostate cancer, which his office indicated is “characterised by a Gleason score of 9,” in a statement released on Sunday.
A press release from Biden’s private office disclosed that his prostate cancer represents a more aggressive strain of the disease, noting that it seems to be hormone sensitive.
“Last week, President Biden was found to have a prostate nodule following an increase in urinary symptoms,” the press release detailed. “On Friday, he received the diagnosis of prostate cancer, characterised by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone. This indicates a more aggressive disease, but the cancer appears to be hormone sensitive, allowing for effective management.”
“The president and his family are discussing treatment options with his doctor,” the statement continued.
Biden’s announcement regarding his cancer diagnosis followed the discovery of a “small nodule” in his prostate during a physical exam.
Earlier reports from February 2023 indicated that former White House physician Kevin O’Connor had assessed Biden’s health and noted the presence of “one small lesion” in his chest.
