Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel, “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” features two men within a single character: one kind and sociable, the other a villainous ruffian, neither of whom knows much about what the other is up to.

Democrats are staring at a similar situation with respect to the presidency, because there are two Joe Bidens, the 10am-4pm teleprompter Joe who, if you squint your eyes, still looks capable of being president, and, well, and then there’s another Joe Biden.

The other Joe Biden, the one who emerges after the sun goes down in a phenomenon known to neurologists, is clearly the problem. He is a dazed old man who cannot complete sentences and stares blankly with no sign of understanding. He is the Joe Biden of the debates, and no sane person would consider him worthy of service.

Biden calls out ‘Morning Joe’ and slams media, political elite as Democrats warn of Trump win

The first question that arises from this strange situation is whether the two Joe Bidens even know each other.

Recall that just a week after that disaster, when questioned by ABC’s George Stephanopoulos about his debate performance, Joe Biden’s somewhat plausible version barely explained it, inventing false details that his opponent, former President Trump, had shouted, as if he was describing something that had happened to someone else.

And while Biden may not remember, or may truly not know, or may truly believe that the debate and his countless other moments of senility were just “episodes,” increasingly, the episodes are becoming the norm rather than the anomaly.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday morning that Biden must decide quickly whether to continue the campaign, which is odd because Biden has been adamantly shouting from the mountaintops for two weeks that the decision to keep fighting was made and carved in stone.

New York Times strengthens urging for Biden to withdraw: ‘He’s embarrassing himself’

But which Biden is Pelosi seeking an answer to? The clairvoyant Biden can’t even convincingly answer the question, and Biden, attending an afternoon ice cream party, seems completely unaware that his health is deteriorating.

The day before, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told Fox’s Peter Doocy in the briefing room that if there was an emergency at 3 a.m., there was a team there to wake up and advise Biden, so which Joe Biden would respond to that alert?

If an incoherent Joe wakes up to a terrorist attack, a nuclear meltdown, or an invasion of Taiwan, does the team just decide what to do? Does someone elect the members of the team?

The question facing the Democrats who may now hold Biden’s fate in their hands is not which one is the real Joe Biden — clearly, both are the real Joe Biden — but whether the country can operate safely and securely under both versions of presidential leadership.

Democrats are beginning to realize, albeit reluctantly, that the answer is no.

Politically, they understand that one more big gaffe from the president will be the end of it, and another big gaffe is almost certain to happen within the next four months.

But the problem is deeper than that, and more urgent, because the danger posed by these two Joe Bidens is not just a threat to America’s future, it’s a threat right now, today.

At the end of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” the kindhearted doctor who had been using the serum to control which person he would become loses the ability to choose, and finds that the uncontrollable Mr. Hyde will eventually surpass Dr. Jekyll forever.

We all hope and pray that a compelling Joe Biden will be with us for many years to come, but the other Joe Biden is already here and showing up more and more frequently, and he cannot be allowed to share the most powerful job in the world.

There are two Joe Bidens, but only one President, which is why they both must resign.
