President Biden called former President Trump “that loser” in remarks Tuesday at the annual gala of the Asian Pacific American Congressional Institute (APAICS).
In his speech, Mr. Biden criticized Mr. Trump’s role in scrapping a bipartisan border deal earlier this year that initially had support even from some of the most staunch conservatives. Biden called on Republicans to “act” on the bill.
“This bipartisan bill has majority support in the House and Senate. But I was told, this guy is a loser,” said Biden, the Republican presidential nominee. He mentioned Mr.
Mr. Biden paused for a moment as the crowd burst into laughter, apparently in response to the comment.
“I think he has a problem. Mr. Trump called the Republicans to block the Senate bill, answered the phone and said, ‘This is a win for Biden, it’s going to be a loser for him, so don’t vote on it.’ “We need to make sure we don’t bring it to the United States,” Biden continued.
“But he’s wrong. Republicans in Congress must act because it’s the right thing to do and America needs it,” Biden added.
Earlier this year, President Trump blasted a bipartisan border security agreement authored in part by conservative Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.), calling it a “death wish” for Republicans. He called it a “great gift to the Democratic Party.”
The deal includes $20 billion for border security and gives the federal government new powers to control the border, including temporary powers to expel immigrants if their average daily number of crossings exceeds established thresholds. authority was granted. The agreement would also have ended “catch-and-release” practices, raised standards for asylum screening and expedited the processing of applications.
The deal was meant to provide national security funding to Ukraine, Israel, and the Indo-Pacific Alliance, but that portion ended up being passed on its own after the border security deal collapsed.
Hill called on Trump’s team to respond.
