Joe Biden Undergoing Radiation Therapy for Prostate Cancer
Former President Joe Biden is currently in a five-week course of radiation therapy to address prostate cancer diagnosed earlier this May, according to various reports.
A spokesperson for Biden stated, “As part of his treatment plan for prostate cancer, President Biden is currently undergoing radiation and hormone therapy,” as reported by NBC News on Saturday.
At 82 years old, Biden is already receiving hormone treatment, and the radiation therapy marks a significant new step in his medical care, as sources indicated.
In September, Biden also had surgery to remove skin cancer from his forehead, specifically a procedure known as “Mohs surgery.” This involves excising thin layers of skin until no cancer remains, which can sometimes be a meticulous process.
Earlier in 2023, during a routine medical exam, a skin cancerous lesion was removed, and at that time, medical professionals indicated that no additional treatment was necessary.
On May 18, Biden’s office revealed on X that he had been diagnosed with an “advanced” form of prostate cancer that had already metastasized to his bones. This update came after he exhibited increased urinary symptoms, which led to the discovery of prostate nodules. The formal diagnosis indicated prostate cancer classified with a Gleason score of 9 (grade group 5), along with bone metastases.
Despite being a more aggressive type of cancer, it appears to be hormone-sensitive and may be manageable, as the statement noted. Biden and his family are currently discussing treatment options with his medical team.
There’s a suggestion that, considering the cancer’s spread to his bones, it might not have been detected for some time. Nonetheless, reports indicate that Biden is “doing well” at present.
