President Joe Biden’s average approval rating in his third year has fallen to 39.8 percent, ranking second behind former President Jimmy Carter, according to a Gallup poll on Friday.
Biden’s low approval rating is well below the 50% mark associated with a successful re-election campaign, highlighting the president’s ascent.
Mr. Biden’s average approval rating is only 2 points higher than Mr. Carter (37.4%). During his term, Mr. Carter faced rising gas prices, inflation, and the Iranian hostage crisis. Like Mr. Carter, Mr. Biden faced rising gas prices, inflation, and the Hamas hostage crisis.

Biden’s third-year average was lower than both men. 1st year (48.9%) and second year (41.0%) Average. Although better than the average for his third year, his first and second year ratings were also the second lowest of any recent president, outperforming Mr. Trump in both years.

According to a Gallup poll conducted from January 2nd to January 22nd, Biden’s latest job approval rating is 41%, but 54% disapprove of his job performance.Since then September 2021, Biden’s approval ratings have ranged from the high 30s to the low 40s after the US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan hit a snag. Prior to that, his first six months in office had enjoyed majority-level approval ratings.
Former presidents Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, Barack Obama and Donald Trump also had average approval ratings below 50 percent in their third year in office, polls showed. Dwight Eisenhower had the highest approval rating in his third year at 72.1%.
