Referee Controversy in Falcons-Rams Game
During the recent game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, ESPN broadcaster Joe Buck criticized the referees for not calling a significant penalty in the Atlanta Falcons’ 27-24 victory over the Los Angeles Rams.
The Falcons secured a late field goal, which gave the Rams a chance to respond with less than 30 seconds remaining and no timeouts. On a crucial second down, quarterback Matthew Stafford launched a deep pass to Tutu Atwell.
The pass, however, bounced off Atwell’s right arm, resulting in an incomplete throw near the 10-yard line. A replay later aired on “Monday Night Football,” revealing Falcons cornerback Dee Alford pulling on Atwell’s left arm, seemingly preventing him from making the catch.
“They might have missed the pass interference,” Buck noted after the replay. His commentary was echoed by rules analyst Russell Yuk, who agreed that the defensive move constituted interference.
Buck pointed out, “Watch Atwell’s left arm. It doesn’t come up to make the catch, and that’s definitely a missed call.”
If the call had been made for pass interference, the Rams would have had the opportunity to drive deep into Atlanta’s side for either a touchdown or a field goal to tie the game. Instead, no flag was thrown, and the game continued. On the next play, Stafford connected with star receiver Puka Nacua, who appeared to make a remarkable one-handed catch near the edge of field goal range.
Unfortunately for the Rams, Nacua lost control of the ball as he fell, which left them facing a 4th and 10 with just 5 seconds on the clock. Stafford attempted to reach Nacua once more, but the pass went incomplete, sealing the Falcons’ surprising victory.
This loss dropped the Rams to an 11-5 record, but they had already secured a playoff berth. They will not clinch the NFC West title and will be positioned as the 5th or 6th seed, contingent on the results of Week 18. The Rams are set to face the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.
