Joe Girardi returns to the Bronx as a broadcaster.
The former Yankees catcher and manager will join YES Network as an analyst next season, the network announced Friday afternoon.
It’s not yet clear how YES plans to use Girardi this season.
Girardi, who previously appeared on the channel in 2004 and 2007, spoke about his return to Yankees baseball on Friday’s episode of ESPN New York’s “The Michael Kay Show.”
When asked if it would be strange to watch his old team, now coached by his successor Aaron Boone, from the broadcast booth, Girardi said he didn’t mind.
“If you look at the people there, [Aaron] “The only player I managed might be the judge,” he said. “This is a completely different team than the ones I used to coach. … It’s amazing how quickly teams switch over. So, no, I don’t really know the players, so that’s weird. I don’t think so.”
Girardi, who spent four years with the team as a player, led the Yankees to a World Series title in his second year as captain in 2009 and reached the playoffs five more times before his final season in 2017.
The four-time World Series champion took the Phillies’ managerial job in 2020, but was fired a third of the way through the 2022 season and ultimately joined the Cubs as a color commentator and analyst that summer. Joined Marquee Network.
Girardi will continue to work with Marquee this season. Reported by Jack Curry of YES Network..
When asked on Friday if he would like to manage again, the 59-year-old said yes, but added: “If I don’t get the chance, that’s fine too.” I feel safe with that. …I love broadcasting too, it’s a great job. I’m really lucky to be back in what I consider to be the home of the Yankees. ”
