Former Senator Joe Manchin of Virginia and Iowa expressed concerns that former President Joe Biden’s administration was heavily influenced by staff advocating for far-left policies, overshadowing the more moderate approach he used to represent. Despite Biden’s long political history, some critics argue that his presidency veered towards liberalism that doesn’t resonate with many American voters. In November 2021, Manchin voiced his wish for Biden to “get back to normal and stop the chaos,” cautioning against moving too far left, as he believes the U.S. is more center-right than it realizes.
By 2025, in the aftermath of the loss of former Vice President Kamala Harris, Manchin shared his reflections with the hosts of the podcast “All In.” He candidly noted his history with Biden’s staff, particularly calling out Ron Klain for steering the administration too far left. Manchin recounted a visit to the White House where he remarked on the liberal composition of Biden’s team, emphasizing that while diversity is important, he felt that many on the staff were unabashedly far-left.
He reiterated that he had conveyed to Biden on multiple occasions that his team was pushing him leftward, a direction Manchin found concerning. While he believes Biden is fundamentally a good person, he feels the president has lost some of his drive. When Klain responded to these criticisms, he stated that the White House agenda reflects what Biden campaigned on, with nearly all Senate Democrats supporting it, except Manchin. He insisted that the staff comprised mainstream Democrats advocating popular policies like paid family leave and child tax credits.
Manchin also reflected on his experience in dealing with staff in the administration, noticing a lack of follow-through on certain agreements they had discussed. He captured his evolving perception of Biden’s presidency, initially filled with hope but culminating in disappointment. While Biden has always leaned left, Manchin questioned whether that inclination was intrinsic or influenced by external pressures as the campaign progressed through various states.
He also addressed the implications for the Democratic Party regarding immigration, suggesting that failure to adopt a moderate stance might lead to significant losses. Stressing the importance of border security, he drew an analogy to property lines stating that just as one protects their home, the U.S. should also secure its borders while maintaining an effective legal immigration system.
Manchin underscored that many Democrats recognize the need for moderation but are restrained by leftist views that may hinder their success moving forward. Fox News Digital reached out to Biden’s office but did not receive an immediate reply.
