Joe Manchin Weighs In on Jasmine Crockett as Democratic Messenger

Former Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia chuckled on Wednesday when Fox News host Martha McCollum asked if he thought Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett was the party’s best spokesperson.

During a segment on Tuesday’s “Hot and Vulgar,” radio host Charlamagne the God expressed his belief that Crockett is currently the most effective communicator for the Democratic Party. After playing a clip of his remarks on “The Story,” McCollum turned to Manchin, who laughed before saying he disagreed with that opinion.

“I don’t find that to be true. I think she’s someone we may not know much about yet, even though she’s gained a lot of visibility,” Manchin said. “I’ve always looked for ways to unite people who prioritize their country over their party.”

He continued, stating, “I belong to one party, which I like to think of as the Party of America, with two factions—Democrats and Republicans. Ideally, they should cooperate because our main goal here is the well-being of the country.”

Manchin also announced he would be leaving the Democratic Party in May 2024 to register as an independent.

Crockett is known for her contentious remarks and has made headlines previously for targeting Republicans, even referring to Texas Governor Greg Abbott as “Governor Hot Wheels” because he uses a wheelchair. She has also compared former President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler.

Despite that, Charlamagne praised her, saying, “Jasmine Crockett is the go-to person for Democrats right now. She’s an exceptional messenger.”

Crockett mentioned on SiriusXM’s “The Lurie Daniel Favors Show” on October 22 that she’s contemplating a Senate run in the 2026 midterm elections. However, NewsNation political commentator Chris Sillizza cautioned on his YouTube channel that such a move could inadvertently benefit Republicans.

“It’s tough to see how Crockett could appeal to centrist voters, particularly in a place like Texas where Democrats are few and far between,” Sillizza remarked. “Even with full Democratic support, victory still seems out of reach. This could play right into the hands of the Republicans.”
