Joe Manchin is no longer a Democrat.

In a post on X, Joe Manchin announced he was leaving the Democratic Party to become an Independent.

“I registered as an Independent because of my commitment to doing all I can to bring our country together,” Manchin said.

Axios reported:

Sen. Joe Manchin, R-West Virginia, officially left the Democratic Party on Friday and registered as an independent.

Why it matters: Manchin, who floated the possibility of running for president as an independent earlier this year, has said he won’t run for reelection to the Senate, but leaving the party could give him the flexibility to change course and run as an independent for Senate or governor of West Virginia.

What he said: In a statement announcing his decision, Manchin accused both Democrats and Republicans of prioritizing “partisan extremism” and “putting our democracy at risk.”

The bigger picture: Manchin is a lifelong moderate Democrat who served two terms as governor of West Virginia before being elected to the Senate in 2010 and has been highly critical of the Biden administration at times.

Manchin had previously announced he would not run for reelection.

The Hill reported:

Manchin, who has served in the Senate since 2010, announced in November that he would not run for reelection this year. Prior to joining Congress, he served as governor of West Virginia from 2005 to 2010.
