Joe Mixon will be sidelined at the beginning of the season after the Texans adjust their roster.

The Texans are gearing up for their season, but they’ll be without Joe Mixon for at least four games. The team confirmed on Monday that he will be placed on the reserve/football injury list, which will take effect at 4 PM on Tuesday, the deadline for NFL teams to finalize their rosters to 53 players.

Mixon hurt his foot during the spring, while he wasn’t with the team. Since then, he hasn’t taken part in any offseason activities, training camps, or preseason games. As a result, he will begin the season on the active/NFI list, rendering him ineligible for the first four games of the 2025 season.

Head coach DeMeco Ryan remained vague about Mixon’s situation when he spoke to reporters. “We’ll update when the time comes,” he mentioned, adding that they are still navigating some decisions collectively with general manager Nick Caserio. It sounds like there’s a lot of moving parts to consider.

With Mixon out, Nick Chubb is expected to step up as the Texans’ primary running back. The team also has Daemon Pierce, Dare Ogamboir, rookie Woody Marks, and Jawal Jordan available to help fill the gap.

Ryan expressed faith in his running backs when addressing the media, which is reassuring. “We know both [Mixon and Chubb],” Ryan said. “You throw Daemon into the mix too. Woody has shown us a lot throughout the preseason. We have a solid group that can really support us this season.”

The Texans will kick off their season against the Rams on September 7th, and it’ll be interesting to see how they adapt without Mixon.
