Having spent two decades in Congress, much of that time under Barack Obama’s presidency, we often found ourselves on the defensive. Winning typically meant blocking his administration’s progressive agenda.
That context makes it imperative for Republicans to recognize the broader implications of President Donald Trump’s assertiveness. He is attempting to reshape the cultural landscape, reversing the harm done by policies during the Biden administration.
A notable recent win was Netflix backing out of its pursuit for Warner Bros. Discovery. If Netflix had succeeded in acquiring Warner Bros., a major player in film and television, it could have spread its liberal ideologies into countless homes.
It’s worth noting that Netflix openly leans left. A staggering 99 percent of its political donations go to the Democratic Party, which often aligns with progressive agendas, including those related to children’s programming.
Fortunately, Trump recognized this potential threat and responded decisively. Now, Warner Bros. is set to be purchased by Paramount, with financing from Trump supporter Larry Ellison. Interestingly, Ellison is even reportedly in discussions with Trump about personnel changes at CNN, which is under Warner Bros. ownership.
This marks a significant victory for conservatives frustrated with a media landscape often opposed to their viewpoints. Additionally, there have been several wins in what are commonly referred to as the culture wars.
The so-called diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs that mandate racial preferences in hiring are being dismantled. This process began on the very first day of Trump’s second term, with a presidential order that called for the termination of any discriminatory programs, including the DEI and broader DEIA policies within the federal government.
Several major corporations have started to follow Trump’s example, leading to a wave of deconstruction of their DEI initiatives. For instance, Goldman Sachs recently abandoned its mandatory diversity requirements for companies aiming to go public. Previously, in 2020, Goldman Sachs had even launched a $10 million “Racial Equality Fund” aimed at addressing issues like racial injustice and inequality. This shift can largely be traced back to Trump’s influence.
Moreover, President Trump is also open to opposing transgender surgeries for minors. Right after taking office, he issued a statement through a presidential order asserting that the U.S. government would not fund or support such procedures for children. He further pledged to enforce laws that restrict these significant and potentially harmful operations.
It’s important to note that before Trump, there was a sort of code of silence around this topic, where anyone questioning the merit of such surgeries faced backlash. A case in point was when the New York Times dared to publish an article addressing the issue, leading various advocacy groups to mobilize thousands to protest.
Recently, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has announced against gender-related surgeries for individuals under 19. The American Medical Association endorsed this stance, marking a significant turn of events, especially since they had previously supported these kinds of surgeries.
It’s fair to assert that none of these organizations would have taken such positions if Biden, Harris, or any other Democrat were in the White House.
There have been numerous other wins for the Republican side as well. Under Trump’s leadership, a presidential order has mandated that museums and parks represent a balanced view of American history. Additionally, wasteful subsidies from the National Endowment for the Humanities have been put to an end, and funding for NPR and PBS has been terminated.
Trump has boldly confronted the cultural elites and the policies they impose on Americans. If the Republican Party can remain cohesive, keep its majority in Congress, and ensure a Republican occupies the White House after Trump’s presidency, more victories are almost guaranteed.
It’s certainly a more favorable position than always playing catch-up. Republicans should stay vigilant and keep pushing for success.
