Mourning Claude Lemieux: A Tribute from Joe Sakic
The hockey community is in mourning after the reported death of Claude Lemieux, a four-time Stanley Cup champion. Joe Sakic, a notable figure in the NHL and a former teammate, expressed deep sorrow over the loss on Thursday.
Sakic and Lemieux played together for parts of five seasons in Colorado, from 1995 until Lemieux’s trade to the Devils at the start of the 1999-2000 season. They celebrated a Stanley Cup triumph together in 1996. Sakic described Lemieux as a “fierce competitor and champion.”
“I am shocked to learn of Claude’s death,” Sakic said in a statement via the Avalanche. “‘Pepe’ was not only a great hockey player but also a fierce competitor and an all-around champion. He was a loyal friend, always there for his teammates. More than that, he was a wonderful family man, cherishing every moment he spent with his grandchildren.”
“Today is a very sad day for the Avalanche family. Claude will be deeply missed by everyone who had the fortune of knowing him. On behalf of the Avalanche organization, we send our love and prayers to Deborah and the Lemieux family. He will be remembered but never forgotten. Rest in peace, my friend.”
Lemieux’s NHL career spanned 21 years, during which he played for teams like the Canadiens, Devils, Avalanche, Coyotes, Stars, and Sharks. He won his first Stanley Cup with the Canadiens in 1986 and was instrumental in bringing home the Devils’ first championship in 1995.
After joining Colorado before the 1995-96 season, he secured another Stanley Cup title in 1996, making him the 10th player in NHL history to win back-to-back championships. His fourth Cup came during his second tenure with the Devils in 2000.
Throughout his impressive career, Lemieux tallied 379 goals and 407 assists in 1,215 regular-season games, along with 158 points over 234 playoff games.
Tragically, Lemieux died by suicide, with reports indicating he was found in a furniture store he owned with his wife in Lake Park, Florida. Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported suicide attempt at the store, which was subsequently secured for investigation.
The Palm Beach County Coroner’s Office has not released any records regarding the case, adhering to a Florida statute that protects the confidentiality of suicide cases.
