Giants’ General Manager Joe Schoen Stays On for 2025 Season
Joe Schoen described his continuation as the New York Giants’ general manager as being both “honored” and “humbled.” He appreciated the patience shown by co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch, especially given the disappointing results over the last couple of seasons.
There’s probably a mix of “lucky” and “relieved” in there too, as Mara and Tisch decided to let him lead the team further, despite the challenges faced. His role, set for a fifth year, includes overseeing all football operations. This decision was reaffirmed following the firing of head coach Brian Daboll on November 10, the same day he was tasked with finding a new head coach. However, a performance review pending at season’s end loomed over him.
That review didn’t end in dismissal; the Giants finished the season with a 4-13 record after snapping a nine-game losing streak, though they needed to win both final games to avoid an even worse finish.
In a joint statement on Monday, the co-owners noted, “The 2025 season was extremely disappointing, with on-field results falling short of the standards this organization and its fans expected.” They also reiterated Schoen’s role as general manager while stressing the importance of stability in their front office moving forward.
They expressed confidence in a young talent foundation that could pave the way for future successes.
Unlike last year’s squad, this team now includes rookie Jackson Dart, who many see as the future franchise quarterback. Schoen made a significant trade on draft day to secure Dart with the 25th pick, a move that was somewhat controversial given last season’s struggles.
The Giants’ record under Schoen stands at 22-45-1, with just one winning season and a single playoff victory, which is less than ideal. Last year’s results were particularly rough, dropping dramatically over two years.
“I made a mistake early on,” Schoen admitted when discussing his qualifications for retaining his position. “But we have ownership that supports us, even when we falter. We added key players like a franchise quarterback and a primary receiver.” He believes they have built a framework for success, emphasizing commitment to their forward vision.
Interestingly, the owners don’t seem to believe the disappointing results entirely reflect the overall talent on the roster.
Initial conversations with potential head coaching candidates have shown a positive response, especially due to Dart’s presence, according to Schoen.
Dart himself has expressed optimism regarding Schoen’s leadership. “I have a lot of confidence in him,” Dart remarked, noting the strong relationship they have formed. “We’re going to take the right steps needed for success next year.” So, he’s clearly hopeful about the direction things are headed.
Receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, a product of Schoen’s first draft class in 2022, also believes in his ability to turn things around. “He can do it,” Robinson stated, recognizing that not every decision will hit the mark, but he’s confident about the solid core players in place for the long term.
Schoen is currently assembling a list of head coaching candidates, which will be shared with ownership later.
“We will consider who the next head coach should be,” Schoen explained, suggesting that while the final decision rests with the owners, the process will be collaborative.
Moreover, Schoen doesn’t foresee difficulty attracting coaching talent simply because they would be working with him. He mentioned having spoken to numerous head coaching candidates and not once has it come up as a concern for them. “In fact, the feedback has been quite the opposite,” he noted, sounding optimistic about the available opportunities, history, and lineup of young talents.
Ultimately, the Giants understand the significance of their next hire.
“We need the right person to lead us back to being competitive,” Schoen remarked. “It’s all about competing for championships every year.”
