Giants’ Coaching and Management Dynamics Shift with Harbaugh’s Hiring
John Harbaugh is not the general manager for the Giants.
That title still belongs to Joe Schoen, but it’s clear who will have a significant influence on roster decisions now. For the first time in the franchise’s century-long history, the head coach is taking center stage in these discussions.
When the Giants brought Harbaugh on board as their head coach, co-owner Chris Mara commented on the importance of this change, stating, “We know it’s important around here, and this is the final decision.” Harbaugh, he noted, does not have absolute authority. “It’s a collaborative effort, and he’s the first to admit that. If he had the final say on everything, he wouldn’t be able to focus on his job.” So, in essence, this is a partnership where the final decisions will be made together.
Harbaugh, a Super Bowl-winning coach, was brought in with hopes of turning around the Giants, who have struggled recently with a 13-38 record since 2023.
During intense negotiations that lasted nearly 72 hours, Harbaugh expressed a desire for direct input on player decisions, aiming to work closely with the roster while bypassing some authority from the general manager. This change would shift the balance of power Schoen held, especially given his experience with the Ravens over 18 seasons.
“I’m not worried about that,” Schoen remarked. He emphasized that titles are secondary to teamwork, stating, “We need to work together, and it’s always going to be what’s best for the New York Giants.” He seems optimistic about collaborating with Harbaugh moving forward.
However, tension could arise if discrepancies emerge between Schoen, the front office, and Harbaugh regarding player targets, draft picks, or decisions about cuts. There’s always that potential, right?
Harbaugh reflected on his previous role in Baltimore, where he provided input on player evaluations, which he expects to continue here. “We should have a vision for the type of team we want to build,” he shared. Communication, he stresses, will be key. It’s important that everyone feels heard but also aligns on the final decisions.
Looking ahead, Harbaugh expressed high hopes for working with Schoen, describing their relationship as “phenomenal.” He acknowledged Schoen’s networking across the league as an asset.
Reports indicate Schoen has yet to sign a contract extension, although he’s under contract until 2026 and is anticipated to finalize an extension post-draft.
Mara noted that Schoen has gained significant respect, primarily due to his deep understanding of the NFL. “He probably knows Joe better than I do,” she mentioned, highlighting their strong connection that developed over time.
