Washington Commanders Set to Return to Capital

The Washington Commanders are on track to return to the nation’s capital, with plans for a new stadium at the historic RFK stadium site. This revitalization includes talks about honoring the franchise’s history, particularly its ties to the original Redskins name and the Native American community.

Senator Steve Daines from Montana shared insights during an interview on Fox News Channel’s “America Reports” last November. He emphasized the importance of discussions surrounding the franchise’s legacy.

Team owner Josh Harris confirmed that the Commanders name will remain, and former Super Bowl champion Joe Theismann expressed hope that the organization will find meaningful ways to respect its past. He mentioned that Harris and his group understand the significance of the Redskins’ history and, as fans, they’re inclined to honor that heritage.

“You know, it’s pretty interesting,” Theismann said. “The logo was designed by Native Americans, and I feel a responsibility to acknowledge the contributions of Indigenous peoples linked to it.” He certainly has a point there; it’s not just about a name or a logo, it’s about respect and recognition.

As for the new direction, Theismann believes it’s crucial for the team to carve out its own identity as the Commanders. “Let’s establish a legacy that resonates with this new group,” he urged, referencing the previous generations of players.

Interestingly, a portrait by artist Blackie Wetzel, depicting John Two Guns White Calf, has historical ties to the Redskins’ logo, dating back to 1972—a fascinating backstory that adds depth to the franchise’s legacy.

Looking ahead, Theismann will be participating in the American Century Championship Golf Tournament at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Club. It seems he has a knack for mixing business with leisure.

The festival kicks off on July 9 and runs until July 13, promising excitement and celebration for fans and athletes alike.
