Joe Tsai’s Reaction to Knicks’ Championship Win

In a city buzzing with excitement over the Knicks breaking a 53-year championship drought, Joe Tsai, the owner of the Brooklyn Nets, isn’t exactly celebrating. It’s a bit of a bittersweet situation for him because, while the Knicks are basking in glory, the trophy they just won slipped through the fingers of his team, who have yet to claim such a victory themselves.

Since acquiring the Nets in 2019, Tsai has been focused on turning the franchise around. When asked about the Knicks’ recent success and whether it shifts his strategy for the Nets, he had a candid response. “Every year, a team will come out on top,” he noted. “This year, it just happens to be the Knicks. It doesn’t feel great for us, and it’s frustrating for our fans—it’s honestly a bit embarrassing. But in sports and business, you can’t let those feelings interfere with your performance. We’re rebuilding and, I think, moving in the right direction.”

Looking back, Tsai’s big moves included signing stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in 2019, and the trade for James Harden in early 2021, creating hopes of a championship era in Brooklyn. However, injuries kept that trio from playing together regularly, and their best shot at a title ended in a painful playoff exit against the Bucks in 2021.

After a couple of disappointing first-round exits in subsequent seasons, the Nets have been in a tricky phase, trying to balance rebuilding with potentially tanking for a better future. Over the last two seasons, they managed to win only 46 games combined, which, given the backdrop of the Knicks’ success, is tough for their supporters to swallow.

Meanwhile, the Knicks have become a reliable force, led by Jalen Brunson, notching a notable playoff run that culminated in a championship victory over the Spurs.

On the upside for the Nets, there’s been a shift under new head coach Jordi Fernandez. They recently signed former Knicks player Julius Randle and are now focused on building a competitive roster, leading with talents like Michael Porter Jr., along with promising first-round draft picks Mikel Brown Jr. and Egor Demin.

General Manager Sean Marks expressed confidence in the team’s direction after the draft, hinting that fans can expect exciting developments ahead. Interestingly, Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment’s CFO, Peter Stern, mentioned that they’re happy for the Knicks, suggesting that their success might draw more attention to basketball, which could ultimately benefit the Nets as well.
