Joel Embiid Critiques NBA Media After Strong Preseason Return
Joel Embiid, the standout center for the 76ers, took an opportunity to call out NBA media during his return to the game after an eight-month hiatus due to arthroscopic knee surgery. He impressed on the court, helping his team secure a 126-110 victory over the Timberwolves in a preseason game held at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
“I’m watching all of them,” he remarked, referring to the media. “They’ve said that according to many, I’m not even among the top 100 players in the league. I guess I need to adjust and figure out how I can contribute to the team’s success.”
Although he didn’t specify who he was addressing, it’s well-known he had played only 58 games over the past two seasons, which has led to some drops in player rankings prior to the start of this season.
Last season, Embiid averaged 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.4 assists in just 19 games. ESPN ranked him 47th on its Top 100 Players list, down from 8th the previous year. Other rankings weren’t much better, with The Ringer placing him at 54th, while Bleacher Report listed him 26th.
Despite the early stage of the preseason, Embiid looked sharp against Minnesota—almost All-Star caliber, really. He scored 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting and added seven rebounds, eight assists, and three steals, with some nice perimeter shooting (2-of-4 from three-point range).
“I’m trying not to dwell too much on what’s behind me,” Embiid shared with reporters. “I feel really good, both mentally and physically. It makes me really happy to be back on the court, playing basketball and doing something I love.”
He continued, “It’s tough when you can’t play, but that’s what fuels my happiness. Tonight, that’s been my focus: being on the court, playing well and helping my team win.”
Coach Nick Nurse expressed satisfaction with Embiid’s performance, noting, “He moved well, shot well, and passed well. I didn’t see many negative aspects in his game.” This positive feedback comes as the 76ers aim for a better season following a disappointing 24-58 record last year.
