Embiid and Harden’s Fractured Relationship
Joel Embiid and James Harden, who had been lauded as one of the top duos in the NBA, seem to have hit a rough patch. After spending nearly two seasons together, Embiid recently revealed that communication between the two has dwindled significantly.
“No one really knows this, but even James wasn’t talking to me,” Embiid disclosed in a candid interview. This unexpected admission paints a picture of a complicated relationship, one that he seems to find troubling. He expressed discomfort about being seen as “that guy,” caught in the middle of such dynamics and noted his frustration with Harden’s absence.
Embiid shared, “It hurts when you feel you’re not doing anything wrong. When you think you have that kind of relationship with someone… you lose a lot.” It’s clear this is weighing on him.
Harden joined the Sixers in 2022 after a substantial trade with the Brooklyn Nets that involved several players and draft picks. With the promise of championship contention, expectations were high. Yet, the Sixers found themselves falling short in the playoffs, getting eliminated in the conference semi-finals two consecutive years.
During the 2022-23 season, Embiid captured his first MVP award, averaging impressive stats. Meanwhile, Harden led the league in assists. Yet, despite this success, tensions began to bubble. After the playoff disappointments, Harden voiced his dissatisfaction—particularly with Daryl Morey, the team’s president of basketball operations—over contract negotiations. When he felt overlooked, he made it clear that he wanted out.
Harden eventually traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, marking a significant shift in the league dynamics. It’s certainly a lot to unpack, and the shift from camaraderie to conflict leaves fans wondering what went wrong.
