Texas Senator John Cornyn’s Political Standing Under Scrutiny
As the election season heats up in Texas, Senator John Cornyn (R) is attempting to position himself as a key ally of President Donald Trump. However, as host Sarah Gonzalez notes, the reality may be quite different.
“Actions speak louder than words,” she asserts, emphasizing that instead of focusing solely on Cornyn’s promises for 2025, it’s vital to examine his track record, especially since approval ratings suggest he may not fare well in the upcoming election.
Political evaluations often provide federal officials with grades based on something called a “Liberty Score,” reflecting their voting records on significant issues over a six-year timeframe.
Gonzalez scrutinizes Cornyn’s score, which comes up short. For context, another Texas Senator, Ted Cruz, has a commendable Liberty Score of 88%. Gonzalez contrasts that with Cornyn’s dismal score of 54%, declaring, “That’s essentially an F. It’s embarrassing for a senator from Texas.”
She cites several factors that may explain Cornyn’s low score.
“Did you know that Cornyn is among Joe Biden’s vocal supporters? He worked hard to negotiate what he termed a bipartisan community safety law under Biden’s administration,” she explains.
Gonzalez points out that this law led to increased federal funding for states adopting the Red Flag Law, essentially creating incentives for compliance.
Interestingly, former President Trump has echoed these sentiments, expressing concerns about Cornyn’s involvement in bipartisan efforts related to gun control, which he criticizes as being pushed by far-left Democrats alongside Cornyn and Mitch McConnell.
“Cornyn has distanced himself from the MAGA agenda quite significantly,” Gonzalez concludes.
