Giants’ Coaching Situation: Harbaugh’s Commitment and Contingency Plans
While the Giants were busy celebrating John Harbaugh’s verbal commitment, his agent was quietly working on a backup plan.
Interestingly, Harbaugh’s agent, Brian Harlan, mentioned he was still in touch with the Tennessee Titans, just in case the negotiations with the Giants took an unexpected turn.
According to a league source, things began to unravel around 1 p.m., which wasn’t entirely surprising to those in the know.
Despite a potential hiccup behind the scenes, the Giants appeared elated within 72 hours of Harbaugh’s rumored signing. Yet, the contract talks seemed to have moments that could easily switch from pleasant to problematic.
It was Paul Schwartz who first broke the news on Wednesday evening stating Harbaugh’s intention to become the Giants’ next head coach.
After calling off a meeting with the Titans on Thursday—emphasizing his commitment to the Giants—the formal announcement of the agreement wasn’t made until early Saturday morning.
There was growing concern among other teams in the league that issues might arise between the Giants and Harbaugh, especially considering the urgency around securing the veteran coach.
It wasn’t until late Saturday, three days after initial reports suggested Harbaugh had signed, that the Giants officially disclosed he would be coaching them, with a hefty five-year, $100 million contract.
Schwartz pointed out that the main sticking point in the negotiations was about the hierarchy regarding Harbaugh’s oversight and personnel authority.
As the Giants worked to finalize the deal, owners John Mara (and his brother Chris) supported the decision, leading general manager Joe Schoen to step back from discussions.
In a confidential meeting on Friday at a location shrouded in secrecy between New York and Baltimore, Harbaugh met with Chris Mara to move negotiations forward.
If Harbaugh’s opportunity had slipped through the Giants’ fingers, they also would have lost their chance with Kevin Stefanski, who was poised to take charge of the Atlanta Falcons.
Now, Harbaugh is already speculating about a playoff chance in the NFC East, marking a new chapter for the Giants as they’ve finally made a significant coaching acquisition.
