Grammy Award winner John Legend disappointed fans with a lackluster cover of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night.
The 45-year-old legend took the stage with musician Sheila E. just before Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz was to deliver his first major address to voters at the United Center.
However, the legendary’s rendition of the ’80s hit was less than inspiring, with some fans of the late “Purple Rain” artist quickly taking to social media to voice their opinions.
“Who decided John Legend was the best person to perform ‘Let’s Go Crazy’? Don’t ever do that again. Sheila E and that guitarist were amazing alone!” posted one X user.
“I don’t want to hear John Legend sing Prince songs,” another wrote.
“Why did they pick John Legend to perform Prince songs? He can’t hit the notes, he has no vibe. It’s an insult to Prince’s legacy. Honestly guys just leave him alone already. Have some respect,” wrote one angry Prince fan.
“Prince in heaven watching the tribute to John Legend,” wrote another, sharing a GIF of Logan Roy from the HBO show “Succession” looking unimpressed.
“Let’s Go Crazy” was a hit from Prince and the Revolution’s 1984 album Purple Rain and is considered one of the musician’s most successful hits, spending two weeks at number one. Billboard Hot 100.
A beloved son of Minnesota, Prince was born and raised in the land of 10,000 lakes, and the award-winning singer passed away in his home state in 2016.
Sheila E., 66, a singer and drummer from California, is a longtime friend and collaborator of Prince.
Legend has been an outspoken supporter of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and Walz’s bid for the White House.
Hours before performing onstage, the “All of Me” singer called Harris “intelligent, charismatic and empathetic” and said she is fully qualified to be commander in chief.
“She’s the perfect person to be president,” Legend said. He told CBS Mornings.
“And I think she also has the character traits that make her a great president, which is that she cares about people’s lives and she wants government to work for people and improve people’s lives,” he said.
Legend was one of many well-known artists who performed at the Democratic National Convention, including Patti LaBelle, Jason Isbell, Mickey Guyton and Lil Jon.
