John Reid, a conservative radio host, secures victory in the Virginia lieutenant governor primary.

Richmond, Virginia – Conservative radio host John Reid has become the Republican nominee for Virginia’s lieutenant governor after going unopposed in Tuesday’s statewide primary.

Reid was the last candidate in the race after Fairfax County supervisor Pat Herity, a rare Republican presence in the heavily Democratic Washington, DC Metro area, withdrew due to health reasons last month.

As a prominent Republican voice in Central Virginia, Reid has previously been involved with the Henrico County Republican Committee and served as a key staff member for former Senator George Allen’s campaign for the RNC in 2024.

This fall, Reid will be running alongside current Lt. Col. Winsome Earl Sears and Attorney General Jason Miyares, who will be seeking reelection as well.

Reid’s campaign has emphasized a message of uniting the GOP, addressing the sometimes slim margins in political contests—even as Democrats often hold an edge in statewide elections.

One key focus of his campaign is education, as he stresses the importance of teaching critical thinking skills without political bias, aiming to prepare students for success in a diverse world rather than creating activists.

On immigration, Reid’s campaign insists that laws must be enforced and that communities can’t turn a blind eye to them. Additionally, he advocates for preserving US heritage by maintaining important landmarks.

A previous controversy surrounded Reid when he faced scrutiny regarding a Tumblr account known for posting a certain photo. He has denied any connections to it, yet some politicians in his party have suggested he step back from the race due to this issue.

On Tuesday night, Reid, Earl Sears, and various Virginia Republicans gathered in Richmond to celebrate their victories, including in the lower rooms of the General Assembly.

Currently, Democrats hold a narrow edge in the Virginia House of Representatives, 51-49, with Republicans looking to gain ground in the upcoming November elections.

Republicans will have a challenging path ahead, particularly in districts that lean Democratic, like those along the Richmond Petersburg Turnpike corridor.

A few Republican representatives, including David Owen (R-Goochland), Carrie Coyner (R-Hopewell), and Amanda Batten (R-Williamsburg), hold seats in these Democratic-friendly areas.

Miyares ran unopposed in his Attorney General primary, while Governor Glenn Youngkin’s time in office is limited.
