New Hampshire Senate Primary Results
In the recent Republican primary for New Hampshire’s vacant Senate seat, former Senator John E. Sununu emerged victorious. He is now set to challenge U.S. Representative Chris Pappas in the upcoming general election. This follows incumbent Senator Jeanne Shaheen’s announcement last year that she wouldn’t be running for reelection.
With around 86% of the votes counted, Sununu received over 67,580 votes, equating to 68.5% of the total. In contrast, former Senator Scott P. Brown secured 26.6%, while former Air Force pilot Sky Danley received just 1.1%, as reported by the Associated Press.
Other Republican candidates, including Sabrina Ann Smith, Andy Martin, Mary Maxwell, Tom Alciere, and Richard A. McMenamon II, each garnered less than 1% of the vote.
Sununu, who held this Senate seat from 2003 until his defeat by Shaheen in 2009, enjoyed an endorsement from President Trump in February. The president expressed his support on social media, calling Sununu an “America First Patriot” and highlighting his backing from notable leaders in New Hampshire.
“John is strongly supported by the most Highly Respected Leaders in New Hampshire, and many Republicans in the U.S. Senate. As your next Senator, he will work tirelessly to advance our America First Agenda,” wrote Trump.
Sununu’s campaign emphasizes his previous experience in Washington, where he focused on combating government waste and protecting the rights of everyday citizens. He is also committed to opposing tax increases and aims to reduce inflation as well as lower costs associated with housing, healthcare, and energy.
On the Democratic front, Chris Pappas won his nomination with 65% of the vote, totaling over 92,190 ballots counted at that moment. Medical scientist Karishma Manzur followed with 32.7%, while other candidates received less than 1% of the vote.
Pappas’s campaign also emphasizes affordability and tax cuts while prioritizing rights for the LGBTQ+ community. He has signaled his intention to push for the restoration of the LGBTQ+ crisis support hotline. Furthermore, he aims to become “the first out gay man to serve in the United States Senate.” Pappas is also an advocate for codifying rights established under Roe v. Wade, which the Supreme Court revoked last year.
