John Tortorella fired by Flyers with just nine games left in season

The Flyers couldn't wait to end the John Torrella era.

Philadelphia fired head coach Thursday morning despite only nine games left in the regular season.

The flyer is currently 28-36-9, the last place in the metro division.

Tortorella vented her frustration after the team's latest defeat on Tuesday night. This is a 7-2 shellac by the Maple Leafs, the Flyers' sixth defeat.

“There's certainly some frustration when you're in this type of situation and when you're always in a loss, and when there's nothing at the end of the tunnel for you, but this falls into me,” said Tortorera, 66.

“We are not very interested in learning how to coach this type of season right now, but I have to do a better job.

Tortorella had a more memorable run as a coach for the Rangers in four or more seasons, leading them into the playoffs in their final years, including a loss in the 2012 Eastern Conference Finals.

Fiery Tortorella taught Lightning, which led the Stanley Cup in 2004, and taught Kanak and Blue Jacket.

“Today, I made the very difficult decision from John to move on as head coach,” Flyers GM Daniel Briere said in a statement. “John played an important role in our rebuilding. He set the standard of play and reestablished what it means to be a Philadelphia flyer. John's passion for the bench was equal only through his philanthropy in our community.

This was the third season of Tortorera with reconstructed flyers and leaves with a record of 97-107-32.

Assistant Bradshaw is taking over as the team's interim coach.
