Johnson believes the House will pass Trump’s significant and attractive bill by Memorial Day.

House Speaker Defends Trump’s Legislative Push

On Sunday, House Speaker Mike Johnson stood by his ambitious timeline regarding President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Building” initiative, asserting that the house is set to approve a “historic” legislative package by a significant anniversary. The House Budget Committee is scheduled to reconvene at 10 PM on Sunday following a vote to progress over 1,100 pages of what is being referred to as “one big beautiful bill.”

“We’re on track, and we’re going to keep pushing to present this national formation law to the American people as swiftly as possible,” Johnson remarked during his appearance on “Fox News Sunday” amid ongoing negotiations. He noted that all members of the committee had completed their tasks and that they ended up spending less money than initially projected. “This is genuinely a generational opportunity,” he added.

Warnings of Health Insurance Losses if Budget Bill Fails

The White House has cautioned that if Trump’s budget plan does not succeed, about 9 million Americans could find themselves without health insurance during a significant recession.

After the bill advanced through the Budget Committee, Johnson explained the intention to transfer the legislative package to the House Rules Committee by midweek, aiming to meet the first Memorial Day deadline over the weekend.

“It’s crucial for people to grasp why we’re moving forward so decisively and why this matters,” Johnson explained. “This is how we fulfill the mandate given to us by the American people in the last election. It will lead to significant savings for citizens, considerable tax relief for American workers, and vital investments in border security.”

He added that the plan also aims to restore U.S. energy independence and revitalize the defense sector. “We’re making sure programs like Medicaid and SNAP are fortified for the American citizens who genuinely need them, not squandered on those who are ineligible or gaming the system,” he noted.

Johnson emphasized the importance of making Trump’s 2017 tax reductions permanent by 2026, stating that the proposal would eliminate overtime and tip taxes. Also, he explained that it is intended to foster American manufacturing by lowering taxes for job creators. In addition, there are plans for new tax relief for seniors receiving social security.

Concerns Among Republicans

“This is a significant undertaking. We cannot afford to fail. We’re doing this for the American people,” Johnson emphasized.

Despite this, some members of the Republican party, including South Carolina Rep. Ralph Norman and Texas Rep. Chip Roy, have been critical of Johnson’s approach, suggesting that there isn’t a genuine effort to cut spending. They are pushing for the implementation of Medicaid requirements for able-bodied adults sooner than the stated timeline of 2029. While Johnson acknowledges their concerns, he expressed doubt about the ability to manage a verification process effectively.

“We’re sorting through all these details, but this represents the largest spending cut in at least three decades—if not longer. It’s historic,” he asserted.

“This is our chance. Like I said, it doesn’t come around often, and we can’t let it slip away,” Johnson added.

The Speaker noted that he could be flexible regarding some Medicaid requirements to resolve internal disagreements, even though Republican leaders do not anticipate any support from Democrats for the bill.

Impending Tax Increases

He pointed out that failing to pass this legislation could result in the most significant tax increase in U.S. history by default after this year ends. “We have to hit our target,” he stated.
