House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said in an interview Sunday that the United States is in the “most dangerous situation since World War II,” citing the economy, global tensions and the southern border. .
“Kristen, wherever I go, I go to blue states, blue districts, battleground states, I think everyone's No. 1 concern is the cost of living,” Johnson told NBC News' Kristen Welker. said on “Meet the Press.''
“On its heels is the wide open border enabled and maintained by border czar Kamala Harris,” the House speaker added. “The whole disaster that comes from that. They're worried about the weakening on the world stage that Biden and Harris predict, which puts us in the most dangerous situation since World War II. .”
Former President Trump's campaign has repeatedly gone after Vice President Harris as a “border czar,” citing her mission to address the root causes of migration from Central America's Northern Triangle region. Last month, President Trump criticized Harris for planning a trip to the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona, saying it was solely for “political reasons.”
Harris is seeking to go on the offensive on immigration, insisting she is dedicated to stopping people from entering the country illegally.
The final weeks of the 2024 presidential election cycle have also seen heightened international tensions, with Iran firing a barrage of missiles at Israel in the wake of pager explosions and Israeli attacks in Lebanon, and tensions with Ukraine. The war between Russia is still raging.
“You have to be strong,” Johnson said later in the interview. “You have to have a steady hand. You need a commander-in-chief that allies respect and that enemies fear. They're not afraid of Kamala Harris. They're afraid of Donald Trump. It’s about people voting.”
Hill has reached out to the vice president's office, the Harris campaign and the White House for comment.
