In an interview with Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas), ABC News reporter Jon Karl indicated he had no idea what Vice President Kamala Harris campaigned on or where she currently stands on certain issues, in part because she has refused to do any interviews since becoming the Democratic presidential nominee.
The incident began when Cotton brought up Harris’ promise in 2020 to end private health insurance provided through employers.
“What do you mean, take away health insurance? What are you talking about?” Carl asked.
“When she ran for president, she said she wanted to eliminate private workplace health insurance,” Cotton replied.
“Oh, you’re right, I mean, that’s not her position right now…” Karl said disdainfully.
“John, she never said that.”
“How do we know that’s not her position?” Cotton retorted, while Kahl continued to argue that Harris no longer believes in the policy.
“She never said that. Maybe an anonymous aide said that on Friday night,” Cotton said.
Kahl then shifted the topic to Harris’ comments at last week’s Democratic National Convention, saying it wasn’t a “radical convention.”
“She’s not on the far left of the party. She’s clearly trying to move toward the center,” Kahl said.
Despite pointing out the progressive ideas Cotton advanced during the 2020 campaign and what the Biden-Harris administration has done while in office, Kahl continued to defend Harris.
“But it’s clear that her position has changed and she said she has changed. … Yes, she has changed,” Karl said.
“No, she didn’t say that, John, she didn’t say that,” Cotton replied.
Many of Harris’ policy shifts since becoming a candidate have been made through campaign statements, not by her, because she has not yet taken the time to give in-depth interviews about her policy positions. Her official campaign website does not yet have an “issues” tab outlining where she stands on issues facing the country.
