Jon Rahm Faces Uncertainty for 2027 Ryder Cup

Jon Rahm may find himself in a tough situation. If he continues to avoid paying his fines, there’s a good chance he could miss the 2027 Ryder Cup.

The golfer, who once ranked as the world’s number one, wasn’t included in a list of eight players who received conditional releases over the weekend. These releases allowed them to pay fines to the DP World Tour and participate in LIV Golf events that conflict with the 2026 season.

Rahm has explicitly stated he will not pay the $3 million in fines he accrued while participating in LIV Golf at the expense of the DP Tour.

The DP Tour has granted releases to players including Laurie Canter, Thomas Detley, Tyrrell Hutton, Tom McKibbin, Adrian Mellonk, Victor Perez, David Puig, and Elvis Smiley.

According to reports, Rahm’s contract requires him to keep his DP World Tour membership and participate in more tournaments than the minimum of four, which would allow his appeals to be dismissed.

With the ongoing controversy unresolved, Rahm’s spot for the 2027 DP Tour, and consequently the European Ryder Cup team, remains highly uncertain. His Ryder Cup teammate, Rory McIlroy, has previously urged him and other players to settle their fines and move forward.

“I think these organizations—including member organizations—have the right to uphold their regulations,” McIlroy mentioned during the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. “When we join the DP World Tour, we sign a document each year agreeing to these rules. Those who chose to go to LIV were aware of the consequences. So, I don’t quite understand the issue.”

Rahm did participate in the 2025 Ryder Cup while appealing the sanctions against him. He has about 18 months before he becomes eligible for the 2027 Ryder Cup. Yet, it’s still unclear when a third-party arbitrator will address his appeal if he chooses not to pay the fine beforehand.
