California Couple Charged with Murder in Son-in-Law’s Death

A man from California, Shouyong Zhang, and his wife, Shili Chen, both 77 years old, are facing murder charges in connection with the shooting death of their son-in-law, Jonathan McKinsey, aged 40. Court documents reveal that Zhang allegedly confessed to the shooting after surveillance footage showed him and Chen firing weapons together in a busy park.

On Wednesday, prosecutors leveled charges against Zhang and Chen, claiming the couple lay in wait to intentionally kill McKinsey. Emergency calls about gunfire at the Dublin Sports Grounds prompted police to respond, where they discovered McKinsey lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead at the scene.

Police were alerted by witnesses about a black Honda Civic that fled the parking lot shortly after the shooting, which led to a high-risk traffic stop conducted by officers nearby.

According to reports, Chen was driving the vehicle and was found to have a firearm in her possession when arrested, while Zhang was the passenger.

Three witnesses identified the couple as the shooters, corroborated by video evidence showing them both firing at McKinsey. Authorities described their actions as dangerously reckless, especially with children present in the vicinity.

After her arrest, Chen was taken to the police headquarters where she declined to speak without legal representation. Surprisingly, Zhang allegedly admitted to shooting McKinsey during a follow-up interview with investigators. Subsequent searches of the Honda yielded another firearm, which Zhang reportedly confessed to using during the incident.

Prosecutors have raised additional allegations that the couple killed McKinsey by ambush, suggesting they deliberately awaited the right moment to attack. They assert that the attack displayed extreme violence and a significant degree of callousness, and that both individuals were armed during the incident.

It’s noted that McKinsey’s death occurred amidst a tumultuous divorce and custody battle involving his estranged wife, Candice Jang, who is Chen and Zhang’s daughter. He had claimed in court documents that he suffered years of abuse at the hands of Jang and her parents, relating some of this mistreatment to his gender identity as a transgender man.

McKinsey had alleged that Chen directed anti-LGBTQ slurs towards him and his children, while accusing Zhang of physically assaulting him during a vulnerable moment in his recovery process. Meanwhile, Jang had made her own accusations of domestic violence against McKinsey, which he contested.

According to recent legal filings, McKinsey and Jang were entrenched in various legal issues before his death, including conflicting domestic violence restraining orders and a custody dispute regarding their children.

The proceedings surrounding the murder case and the ongoing legal battles of the involved parties are still evolving, and it isn’t clear yet if the accused couple will have legal representation as they face these serious charges.
