Jonathan Turley Offers Harsh Critique of Letitia James’ New Lawsuit Against Trump

Turley Critiques Letitia James’ Lawsuit Against Trump Administration

Jonathan Turley, a law professor at George Washington University, commented on Democrat Attorney General Letitia James’ recent lawsuit against the Trump administration, describing her actions as “really crazy.” James filed the lawsuit against the Department of Health and Human Services, alleging that the Trump administration is “obstructing” federal operations.

During an appearance on America Reports, Turley suggested that James has a tendency to target political adversaries. He expressed concern about the implications of the Trump administration’s legal challenges, particularly the reliance on favorable courts in blue states that issue national injunctions. “This means that the president can’t effectively govern unless he navigates through numerous district court judges. Any one of them could issue a national injunction, so to implement a policy, you basically have to win every case,” he explained.

James had previously pledged to investigate President Trump during her 2018 campaign and filed a lawsuit in September 2022, alleging that Trump inflated the value of his assets by over $40 million, which led to a total claim of $354 million by February 2024.

Turley stressed the need for public awareness regarding the influence of judges on presidential power, noting that the presidency could effectively be sidelined by a national or district court judge’s injunction. He mentioned that some of these judicial orders seem unconstitutional but must still proceed through the legal system. “What many Democrats realize is that this leaves the president stymied in his third year until he can actually implement any policy changes,” he said. He expressed hope in the Supreme Court reconsidering national injunctions, emphasizing the need for clarity on these issues.
