Tributes Begin for John MacArthur
Christian authors and advocates, including Joni Eareckson Tada, honored their longtime friend Pastor John MacArthur, who died on Monday at the age of 86 due to complications from pneumonia.
“John MacArthur has entered heaven. Ah, what a rich welcome. John dedicated his life to studying, proclaiming, and defending God’s Word, and I’ve been one of the many who’ve benefited from his contributions. His faith has become, quite literally, sight, and what he sees now is beyond anything he ever imagined,” Tada shared in a heartfelt post on Facebook.
Her post also featured images of herself, her husband Ken, along with MacArthur and his wife, Patricia.
“Ken and I miss our friends,” she added. “In 1979, Dr. MacArthur was a founding board member for Joni and Friends, offering wisdom and guidance while leading this new ministry and demonstrating its potential for global impact.”
Tada, who lives with quadriplegia, commended MacArthur for his faithful leadership at Grace Community Church, which greatly influenced the early programs of Joni and Friends, highlighting what they learned from him and his community.
She noted that MacArthur officiated her wedding to Ken, as reported by Christian Post.
“John also married Ken and me on a sunny July morning at Grace in 1982. What a privilege it was to hear him perform that ceremony.”
Tada wrapped up her tribute by quoting a longtime friend who recognized MacArthur for standing firm in his beliefs.
“You don’t have to agree with everything he said, but you knew what he meant. He stood for the Bible, for the truth spoken with authority… it’s clear, costly, and profound,” she said, adding, “John MacArthur was a prophet of our time.”
Tada mentioned that she, along with Joni and Friends, are keeping Patricia, MacArthur’s wife, and their family in their prayers during this difficult time.
“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints,” she quoted from the Psalms to conclude her message.
MacArthur was a pastor at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, and he also held roles at Master’s Seminary and Master’s University. Known for his strong, descriptive sermons, MacArthur’s messages were shared through his nationally syndicated program “Grace to You.” Over his career, he authored more than 400 books and study guides, including the John MacArthur Study Bible.
