Jordan Spieth ends season on low note, set for surgery after FedEx St. Jude Championship

Following his disappointing season-ending performance at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Jordan Spieth will undergo surgery on a torn sheath in his left wrist, an injury that has been bothering him since the week before the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill.

After last year’s Ryder Cup, he aggravated the pain again when he suddenly injured it while reaching for the toaster while making his son breakfast. Spieth said he was “shocked” when he hurt it then. Then, at the Hero World Challenge last December, Spieth said he and his team had sorted the problem out.

But now, with plenty of time off before the start of the 2025 season, Spieth has opted to undergo surgery to completely repair his wrist.

“I need to get the surgery done as soon as possible and then I’ll go through the process,” Spieth told Doug Ferguson. Associated Presswas first to report the news.

“Unless there’s a reason I have to rush back, I’ll try to go back as slowly as possible.”

He said it will take Spieth three months to recover. If that timeline holds true, Spieth would feel fully recovered by early December. Of course, it would be a surprise to see Spieth tee it up at the Hero World Challenge, which takes place in the Bahamas, given that it’s not an officially sanctioned PGA Tour event.

Spieth’s wrist problems may explain why he struggled throughout the 2024 season. He managed to qualify for the FedEx St. Jude Championship, finishing the regular season 63rd in the FedEx Cup standings. But his last top-10 finish was at the Valero Texas Open the week before the Masters. Spieth missed the cut at Augusta National and didn’t play in any of the other three majors, with his best result being a tie for 25th at Royal Troon. His last win on the PGA Tour was at the RBC Heritage in 2022.

Unfortunately, Spieth had another poor week, finishing tied for 68th, which means he won’t be able to compete in the BMW Championship, which is open to the top 50 players in the FedEx Cup standings, nor will he be able to play in all eight signature events next season.

But Spieth still has a lot of issues to sort out in his mind, and hopefully, for his own sake, he can get healthy over the next few months and return to the winning team in 2025.
