One of the two Jordanian nationals who attempted to enter Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia earlier this month had entered the United States illegally in April before being released from custody, the Department of Homeland Security said. multiple sources told Fox News.

The individual, who is currently in ICE custody and awaiting release along with a colleague, crossed the U.S.-Mexico border in the San Diego area, officials said.

The source said he was initially given a notice to appear in court after no incriminating information was found against him, and was released. The other Jordanian national was on an overstayed student visa.

The attempted break-in occurred on May 3rd. A base spokesperson said two people in a box truck were stopped at the gate and the driver told military police he was delivering to the post office and was working for a subcontractor. Amazon.

However, an Amazon spokesperson told Fox News that it does not appear these individuals were making deliveries on behalf of the company and that the matter is being investigated.

As the men were not attached to the base and did not have approved qualifications, they were taken to a holding cell for examination.

Homeland Security officials who spoke to Fox News said neither man has any criminal history in the United States.

Officials also said their identities were not being released due to privacy concerns.
