Jose Caballero demonstrates his case for being the Yankees' regular shortstop

BOSTON – Yankees Lose to Red Sox, Highlighting Shortstop Dilemma

The Yankees faced a 6-4 defeat against the Red Sox at Fenway Park on Sunday, showcasing both impressive offensive and defensive moves. Jose Caballero, in particular, stood out during the game.

This marked Caballero’s fifth consecutive start. It’s been a shift in strategy for the team as utility players have seen reduced playtime this season. Meanwhile, Anthony Volpe is still recovering from a cortisone shot in his left shoulder, a result of a small lip tear he suffered back in May.

With the postseason approaching, the Yankees are uncertain about their plans at shortstop. Prior to the game, manager Aaron Boone expressed that he expected Volpe to be available for bench use. However, he didn’t commit to playing Volpe in Minnesota on Monday, indicating a daily decision would need to be made between him and Caballero.

“We do our best every day,” Boone commented, and given Caballero’s recent performances, it’s hard not to see him as a strong contender for the position.

During the game against the Red Sox, Caballero’s contributions included not only a home run but also some impressive fielding, most notably a successful dive to his left in the seventh inning that saved a run. He rounded out his efforts with a strong throw to first base to complete the play.

The Yankees are banking on Caballero, who they acquired from the Rays at the trade deadline, especially as Volpe continues to struggle with injuries and has been less effective at the plate.

Caballero mentioned that consistent playing time “helps a lot,” and when reflecting on his defensive showings over the past week, he emphasized, “I’m trying to help the team. It doesn’t matter what I do. As long as I keep winning, I’ll be happy.”

This situation arose partly due to Volpe’s ongoing physical limitations; he had been part of the lineup even while underperforming. After Volpe exacerbated his injuries and missed the last two games against Detroit, a decision needed to be made.

Caballero’s recent performance, including two doubles and a home run, made this choice clearer to the coaching staff.

Boone shared positive feedback about Caballero, indicating he has generally performed well at shortstop, despite some hiccups, including a moment of poor footwork while attempting a double play in a recent game.

“He looks smooth, especially in the infield,” Boone noted, highlighting that mistakes are part of the game and should be expected as Caballero continues to gain experience.

However, with the postseason nearing, the Yankees’ shortstop situation remains precarious. Volpe had a difficult regular season last year but turned it around during the playoffs, adding to the complexity of the current decision-making process.

It seems flexibility will be essential moving forward, just as it was in 2022 when the Yankees rotated Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Oswaldo Cabrera, and Oswald Peraza at shortstop.
