Jose Siri’s Remarkable Back-to-Back Grand Slams
This week, Los Angeles Angels outfielder Jose Siri delivered two extraordinary highlight-reel moments.
In what might be considered a rare occurrence, Siri managed to rob a grand slam one day and then hit one himself the following day.
The first game featured Siri’s former team, the Tampa Bay Rays.
In the third inning, with two outs and the bases loaded, Rays infielder Taylor Walls hit a ball towards the left field corner, seemingly on track to go over the fence. However, Siri made a stunning leaping catch, preventing a grand slam and keeping himself from going beyond four at-bats.
Less than 24 hours later, Siri found himself in a similar scenario, this time as a batter.
The Angels were playing against the Colorado Rockies at Angel Stadium, and again with two outs and the bases loaded in the third inning. Siri connected with a pitch from Kyle Freeland, hitting it down the left field line for a grand slam, flipping his bat in celebration as the ball soared into the bleachers.
This marked Siri’s second career grand slam, showcasing yet another impressive performance. Since being called up from Triple-A Salt Lake on May 16, he has energized the Angels, hitting .304 with power at the top of the lineup.
Sadly for Siri, neither game ended in a win for the Angels. Despite his spectacular catch, they lost 5-2 to the Rays, and then fell short in a close 9-8 game against the Rockies, even with Siri’s grand slam.
Still, it’s hard to recall other players who have pulled off such sequences. Within just two days, Siri transitioned from making a defensive play that saved runs to producing runs himself with his bat. It’s a striking reminder of how swiftly a baseball game can change with a single swing.
