Joseph Gordon-Levitt Advocates for Accountability of Tech Companies

Actor and director Joseph Gordon-Levitt is lending his voice to parents grieving the loss of children due to online abuse. He made an appearance on Capitol Hill, criticizing tech companies for evading responsibility under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.

Gordon-Levitt joined Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin in backing the bipartisan Sunset 230 bill. This legislation aims to revoke the longstanding legal protections that shield social media platforms from liability for harmful content posted by users.

“I’ve listened to many heartbreaking stories and tried to remain calm,” Gordon-Levitt said while supporting other parents who have faced similar tragedies. “When I see these images, I can’t help but think of my own kids.” He’s a father to three children, all under 12.

Addressing the current situation, he expressed, “If certain tech companies knew they could be held accountable, maybe they could prevent harm to children online. But with Section 230, they aren’t liable, so they let these awful things happen and prioritize profit over the well-being of kids,” he added, clearly moved by emotion.

In addition to Gordon-Levitt, other parents shared their painful experiences, such as Congressman Brandon Guffey from South Carolina.

“I lost my 17-year-old son, Gavin, to suicide. I later discovered he was a victim of sextortion. This happened in a matter of hours,” Guffey recounted. “He seemed happy; there were no signs that anything was wrong, and I hadn’t even known the term ‘sextortion’ before this.” He elaborated, saying, “Afterward, I learned that my niece was also being targeted by the same individual.” Unfortunately, a critical account was not deleted in time, allowing the perpetrator to continue targeting other kids.

Other parents recounted how they lost their children to acts of cyberbullying and risky connections on social media platforms. Gordon-Levitt implored legislators to take action against Section 230, emphasizing the need for accountability in the tech industry.

“I’m calling on all senators to support this bill unanimously. We can’t let tech companies operate with such impunity anymore. It’s time for serious change,” he stated passionately.
